I’d always wanted to go into finance, but was unsure which route to take, when a family friend who has a senior role in finance suggested LCH.Clearnet was a very good place to get experience and knowledge. I took his advice and I’ve just finished a year on their Industrial Placement Programme.
Compared with some larger organisations, the size and nature of LCH.Clearnet meant I got a lot more experience here, and I was always treated as a real employee, rather than an undergraduate. I did a lot of training because they’re very keen for you to gain as much knowledge as possible. They don’t molly coddle you, but you always feel looked after – and that includes the very good benefit scheme.
My official role was Project Support in ForexClear, a new project for LCH. I was originally working on cost and planning forecasting and reporting, and I was able to attend many of the Risk, Operations, IT, Legal and Business Development meetings with members, often helping by taking the minutes. I also worked closely with ForexClear’s CEO, CIO and COO – an undergraduate wouldn’t normally get exposure to this kind of seniority.
After around eight months I was interested in moving towards the sales and client relationship side. I approached senior management in this area and asked if I could come to some of their meetings. That was when I realised this was the area I wanted to go into. I really enjoyed going out to meet the clients, seeing how they worked and having to constantly be on the ball to answer their questions. I’ve now been accepted onto the new graduate programme with ForexClear, mainly within the Sales and Client Relationship area.
